“This looks amazing!” I gasped as I took in the haunted attraction. Blaze grinned beside me. True to his word, Blaze had secured tickets and picked me up at home before driving back to Rapid City and bringing me here. The attraction was set within the shadows of the Black Hills and eerily lit. It looked seriously spookily fantastic.

An old gothic mansion stood within a cemetery that you had to pass through to reach the house’s entrance. Once inside, you walked or ran through a maze of rooms before leaving and stepping into a hedge maze. The next step was to cross a creaky bridge over a stream running from the maze. Once through, you tackled the garden of statues before coming to a stone labyrinth. On successfully negotiating that, you found the spooky lake. On surviving the horrors in the water, you entered the haunted forest before finding yourself at the café and gift store. There was an option to purchase pictures of your path through the attraction.

“Yeah, the girls opened this straight out of college, the three of them: Lina, Marissa and McKenna. As it grew, they added other attractions and what you see today is the culmination of their efforts.”

“Well, they did a wonderful job!” I said, bouncing on my feet, excited to be here. Because this attraction had some really great write-ups, and I’d longed to visit but never had the time. The prices at the door caught my attention. A customer could buy a complete attraction pass or one of two set half routes. The partial ones included the cemetery and house but then split the attractions. I imagined this was a real money maker.

“Are you ready?” Blaze asked, snagging my hand.

“Sure, let’s get this show on the road!” Blaze dragged me to a wrought-iron gate. The ticket booth stood guard at the gates, and you had to be buzzed through. As soon as Blaze showed the tickets, we were given a white rubber band to wear on our wrists. I imagined that each different admission had a matching-coloured bracelet.

“This is the panic button. Should you find yourselves in difficulties, press this and remain where you are. Security will be with you as quickly as possible, which is usually within five minutes.” The girl in the ticket booth smiled.

“Wow, do they get pressed much?” I asked. The teenager smirked.

“More than you think by big butch husbands who can’t handle the horrors inside. Rarely the girlfriends hit them, and they often continue while the men are escorted out.” I began laughing as Blaze looked doubtfully at the employee. Cheekily, she winked and handed him the panic button that you wore around your neck.

“Let’s go!” I demanded and dragged Blaze with me. Suddenly he wasn’t so gung-ho to explore the attraction. Zombies popped out of the graves, making Blaze jump as I laughed and shrieked through the cemetery. We took a winding route through it. It lasted a full ten minutes as a group of actors backed us up and forced us forward with a different batch.
